Why is MTEMC replacing my electric meter?

MTEMC is committed to providing affordable, reliable, safe electricity and outstanding service to its members. New technology upgrades, like your advanced meter, will help us improve long-term reliability as well as the way we serve you.

What is an advanced meter?

An advanced meter offers wireless communications capabilities between your electric meter and MTEMC. With this wireless communications technology, MTEMC will be notified if your power is out before you call us. This is especially important during storms, when outages may occur. These new meters will let us resolve issues much faster, since we no longer have to send trucks out on the road to look for downed poles, or rely strictly on member calls.

Will I be charged for the new meter?

No. There is no cost to you to receive the new advanced meter.

Do I have to have an advanced meter?

In order for members to realize the benefits of the new metering technology, every member should have one. The new advanced meters will provide the platform for many new important benefits to our members. Is the new meter going to change or affect my current electric service?

With your new meter, you will experience no changes to your electric service.

Prior to your meter upgrade, you will receive a phone call from MTEMC letting you know the date when the meter exchange will take place. The process will only take a few minutes, and we will make every effort to exchange your meter at a time that is convenient for you. During installation, you may experience a brief interruption of service.

When will I be getting an advanced meter?

Meters will be exchanged starting summer 2015 for all MTEMC members.

Are all MTEMC members getting a new meter?

Yes, all residential and commercial members will be getting an advanced meter.

What if I am not home when you come to install the meter?

We will replace the meter and leave a door hanger stating we have been to the location. If we cannot access your meter, we will note that on the door hanger and you can call us to schedule an appointment.

Is there anything I should be aware of while the worker is installing the meter?

During the meter exchange you will experience a brief interruption of your electricity. If you are concerned about this interruption, please speak with your installer to express any of your concerns.

The interruption will only be a few minutes. For example, if you are working on the computer, you may want to save your files before the installation occurs. Just let the installer know that you need a few minutes, and he or she can resume installation after you have clicked "Save".

Is this going to affect my cost for electricity?

We are installing these new meters as a benefit to our members and you will not see any change in your cost of service.

Will my bill look any different?

No. Your bill will not look any different after your new meter is installed.

Will I be billed any differently with a new advanced meter?

No. Even though your new meter has the ability to measure energy use at shorter intervals, you will continue to be billed based on your monthly kWh usage. Commercial accounts that are currently billed a demand charge will continue to be billed demand and energy charges.

Are advanced meters the same as smart meters?

Smart meters have become a nickname for meters used in advanced metering infrastructure. We use the technical term advanced meters because that is what they are. They are an advancement in technology and a platform for future enhancements. MTEMC has made investments in upgrading the technology in the distribution grid for many decades. From transformers, to wires, to poles, to substations, we continually work to improve the reliability of your electric service.

Do advanced meters pose any health risks?

At MTEMC we are committed to member safety and security. The new meters work on wireless technology called radio frequency much like your cellular phone, television, and microwave oven. How will I know if the installer really works for MTEMC?

To further our commitment to the safety and security of our members, all installers’ trucks and uniforms will be co-branded MTEMC and UPA. Installers will also be able to provide proper identification.

Is my data secure?

Due to the fact that safety and security of our members is a priority, MTEMC abides by the strictest industry guidelines for data security and privacy.
