Bird leaves 8,500 Middle Tennessee Electric customers in the dark

A bird flying into MTEMC’s substation equipment caused approximately 8,500 members to lose power in parts of Williamson County’s Franklin and Cool Springs area this afternoon for about 30 minutes.

The bird disrupted MTEMC's Franklin City substation around 3:00 p.m., causing a short circuit, which shut down the cooperative’s Curd Lane substation also.

MTEMC crews got the power back on at 3:30 p.m.

"We are sorry for the inconvience the outage caused for our members," MTEMC spokesperson Todd Palmer said. "Animal-caused interruptions are an unfortunate reality, but we're constantly examining ways to prevent them as much as possible."
