MTEMC pays $4.3 million in taxes to communities

MTEMC Murfreesboro Customer Accounting Coordinator Susanne Taylor hands a $1,440,440 check to Rutherford County Trustee Teb Batey. It was MTEMC’s annual ad valorem tax payment, which was the county’s second largest.

Middle Tennessee Electric’s 2009 tax payment was one of the largest in each of the primary counties it serves this year, as is typically the case.

The electric cooperative pays out ad valorem (“according to the value of”) taxes annually. The tax is based on the assessed value of Middle Tennessee Electric’s infrastructure — buildings, substations, transformers, poles, lines. The cooperative’s total ad valorem tax payout across its service area for 2009 was approximately $4.3 million.

MTEMC’s tax payment was Wilson County’s largest, just ahead of Nashville Superspeedway. MTEMC paid out $1,123,076 in total taxes to the county. In addition, tax payments were also made to Lebanon for $52,260 and to Watertown for $4,002.

MTEMC’s tax payment was Cannon County’s largest. The ad valorem tax total in the county was $188,881. Also, $19,683 was paid out to the city of Woodbury.

In Williamson County, Middle Tennessee Electric was seventh on the list of the county’s top taxpayers, paying out $1,162,681. In addition, tax payments were made to the city of Brentwood for $13,010; Fairview received $8,585, and $51,456 was paid to Franklin.

In Rutherford County, Middle Tennessee Electric was the second highest taxpayer, behind Nissan. Middle Tennessee Electric’s Rutherford County ad valorem payout was $1,440,440. In addition, a check for $210,734 was made out to Murfreesboro, and Smyrna received $64,063.

Middle Tennessee Electric serves approximately 180,000 residential and business customers in Cannon, DeKalb, Maury, Rutherford, Smith, Trousdale, Willamson and Wilson counties.
