Scammers repeatedly attempt to steal our members’ money by posing as Middle Tennessee Electric employees. These attacks typically occur during periods of high energy consumption like summer and winter. During these seasons, our members consume more energy than normal which results in a higher monthly bill, and scammers use this to their advantage. Because your monthly bill is higher, the scammers will approach you demanding payment immediately, or they will threaten to shut off your power.
Don’t fall for it! Currently, we are aware of three specific scams that have occurred recently: phone calls, email, and door-to-door. Below you’ll find some information to help you spot a scam and determine if the interaction you’ve had is legitimate or not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MTEMC require immediate payment through cash backed debit/credit cards to prevent service disconnection?
No. We allow members to pay through a number of options, including cash, money order, and bank draft. You can view all of our payment options here.
Does MTEMC disconnect service without previous notification?
No. Before a member is disconnected for non-payment, they will be contacted through two automated calls and receive a letter to their billing address. We do not disconnect without advance notice, and members must initiate contact with us for payment to be made.
Will MTEMC show up at my property demanding payment?
No. MTEMC will not show up at your property demanding payment. Members are directed to contact us at 877-777-9020, through myMTEMC, or by visiting a local office to pay their bill.
If you receive a phone call and suspect it’s a scammer, what should you do?
Hang up and give us a call at 877-777-9020. Even if we did legitimately call you about your account, we won’t be offended if you hang up on us and call us back at 877-777-9020. We’d rather you be safe than be a victim of a scam.
If someone shows up at my property asking for immediate payment, what should I do?
Safely get away from the person, and give us a call at 877-777-9020 to confirm their identity. If they are not one of our employees, you should call your local police department to report the scam.

How can members spot a scam email?
Middle Tennessee Electric uses myMTEMC to allow members to access and manager their accounts online or through the mobile app. One way to spot a scam email is by looking for misspellings, typos, and other grammatical problems. Another way to spot a fake is by looking at the name of the company, email address, or vocabulary. Scammers often misspell or use incorrect phrases. In the image below, you'll notice this scammer didn't use our correct name of Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation. You'll also notice that the email address is connected to a sender not related to myMTEMC. The last easy way to notice the email is a fake is through the time zone mentioned in the email.
